Red Wine

Three levels and a little tweeking. These wines range for very good to fabulous. In comparison with wine-by-the-bottle the quality is higher and the price is lower. What's not to love?

This is not the wine your grandparents made.

4/5-week: nose and body at a fraction of the price

6-week: authentic quality from the day you bottle

8-week: complex wines that only get better as they age

And finally. We do experiment - on our own wines! Check out Nora the Explora for something outside the box.

Amarone, Italy

Made in 8 weeks
Price: $264.99 in store/$195.99 at home

Alcohol: 14.7%
Body: Full
Oak: Medium

Sweetness: Dry

Notes: Amarone is special. Grown in the Valpolicella region using the classic Valpolicella grapes of Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara, it is the last wine to be harvested. Already rich, its grapes are allowed to dry and dehydrate. By the time fermentation begins the wines are a dry concentration of flavour and sugar. The result is a rich and full-bodied wine with acidity. A hint of sweetness and flavours of mocha, chocolate, raisins, black cherry, and dried figs make this an exceptional wine. Enjoy to today, but age for something amazing.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Australia

Made in 8 weeks
Price: $264.99 in store/$195.99 at home

Alcohol: 14.7%
Body: Full
Oak: Medium
Sweetness: Dry

Notes: Cabernet Sauvignon is the world's must adaptable and most widely grown wine grape. At its best in a warm, but not hot, climate this grape is at its best. Black currant and dark cherry flavours enhanced with notes of spice and toasted oak. Big in flavour and structure with well-integrated acidity and tannins that offer aging potential

Mobirise

Grenache Syrah, Spain

Made in 8 weeks
Price: $264.99 in store/$195.99 at home

Alcohol: 14%
Body: Medium
Oak: Medium
Sweetness: Dry

Notes: Grenache (or Garnacha in Spain) is a name that you will rarely find on a wine bottle, but it is unquestionably the blending grape. Think of Chateau-Neuf-du-Pape. At its best in Spain, Grenache brings blackberries, black pepper, earthy notes, and a hint of tobacco. This noble grape lacks acidity, tannins and colour, but rich, earthy Syrah provides the perfect balance. Enjoy.

Malbec, Chile

Made in 8 weeks
Price:
$264.99 in store/$195.99 at home

Alcohol: 14.5%
Body: Medium
Oak: Medium
Sweetness: Dry

Notes: There is nothing quiet like Malbec, and nowhere to grow it quiet like South America. Plum and dark berries with oak and vanilla. Structured, tannins and fragrant fruit, hints of tobacco and leather. But none of this describes the unique character of Malbec. The plumy character and tannin/acidity balance come, in part, from the availability of suitable land at altitude. Malbec is a love-it or hate-it wine, but for Malbec lovers, this is a truly rewarding wine.

Mobirise

Merlot, Chile

Made in 8 weeks
Price: $264.99 in store/$195.99 at home

Alcohol: 14.5%
Body: Medium
Oak: Medium

Notes: Merlot is highly adaptable and thrives across the globe. Chile offers superb grapes from an ideal climate. Vines are harvested late to give flavours of rich plums and blackberries with silky tannins. Toasted oak and herbaceous notes combine to produce a classic Merlot.

Pinot Noir, Australia

Made in 8 weeks
Price: $264.99 in store/$195.99 at home

Alcohol: 14.1%
Body: Medium
Oak: Medium
Sweetness: Dry

Notes: For those of us who cut our teeth on bold jammy Australian reds, Pinot Noir is a revelation. Balance and subtlety combine in a varietal that commands the highest prices. Black cherries, strawberries combine with silky tannins, but it is the earthy yet ethereal quality the makes Pinot Noir so special.

Mobirise

Rosso Grande Excellente, Italy

Made in 8 weeks
Price: $264.99 in store/$195.99 at home

Alcohol: 14.6%
Body: Full
Oak: Medium
Sweetness: Dry

Notes: Start with the classic Valpolicella grapes of Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara. After harvesting allow the pressings to steep in the Amarone grapes skins and the result is a big, big wine. This Ripasso style is rightly cherished in Italy. This full-bodied wine bursts with berries, cherries and robust tannins. So far from anything that resembles an old-fashioned wine kit.

Mobirise

Shiraz, Australia

Made in 8 weeks
Price: $264.99 in store/$195.99 at home

Alcohol: 14.8%
Body: Medi um
Oak: Medium

Notes: It isn't subtle, but what is not to love about a rich jammy Shiraz? Bold, fruit-forward and backed by vanilla oak and chocolate.  A modern classic.

Mobirise

Super Tuscan, Italy

Made in 8 weeks
Price: $264.99 in store/$195.99 at home

Alcohol: 15.1%
Body: Medium
Oak: Medium
Sweetness: Dry

Notes: In the 1980s young Italian vintners in Tuscany became frustrated with the bureaucracy and limitations of Chianti. Blending their fine Sangiovese grapes with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah produced fabulous wines under the collective name of Super Tuscan. Now accepted and lauded, Super Tuscan is a full-bodied and heavily oaked wine in which raspberries and blackberries and supported by rich tannins and firm acidity. Vanilla, earthy notes and pepper contribute to the bold complexity.

Mobirise

Valpola, Italy

Made in 8 weeks
Price: $264.99 in store/$195.99 at home

Alcohol: 14.0%
Body: Medium
Oak: Medium
Sweetness: Dry

Notes: Valpolicella is enhanced in both Amarone and Rosso Grande, but the best Valpolicellas stand out in their own right. In the dark days of the 1980s Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara were grown for quantity and Valpolicella's reputation was tarnished. Thankfully, Italian viniculture has return to its rightful place and  Valpolicella is once again a unique combination of fruit-forward raisins, black cherries and prunes with firm tannins, oak and chocolate.

Notes: Cabernet and Shiraz have found their home in Australia, but Cabernet-Syrah-Zinfandel is a California blend that has taken a seat with the finest reds. Red fruits, cherries and black berries with chocolate and vanilla. The true key to the joy of this wine is the balance of vibrant fruit, structured tannins and balancing acidity.

Notes: Three grapes that would never be found together in Europe. The classic French Cabernet Sauvignon, combined with the quintessential Australian Shiraz and Italian Primitivo. California has brought these grapes together to produce a bold and magnificent wine. Berries and cherries are overlaid by toasted oak and its rich vanilla tannin flavors. Well ripened grapes offer overtones of leather, chocolate remove and space. It is easy to get lost in a wine with so much character.

Alcohol: 13.5%

Enigma, California

Made in 6 weeks
Price: $219.99 in store/$159.99 at home

Alcohol: 13%
Body: Medium
Oak: Medium
Sweetness: Off-Dry

Notes: It seems that Enigma is a Zinfandel, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot which really is a fairly established blend of some of the best wines in California. The key here is the off-dry character. Although ff-dry gets a bad rap, it doesn't have to mean sweet at all. That applies to many white and almost all off-dry reds. Its character is truly more fruit forward the blackberry and other black fruit notes. These combine with softer tannins and lightly acidity. That said, it remains a complex and structured wine with noticeable oak, vanilla and spice.

Mobirise

Luna Rossa, Italy

Made in 6 weeks
Price: $219.99 in store/$159.99 at home

Alcohol: 13.5%

Oak: Medium
Sweetness: Dry

Notes: Start with Valpolicella grapes (Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara) and allow them to steep in the grape skis of Amarone. This Ripasso style produces full-bodied, bold wines that age beautifully. Luna Rosso offers ripe black cherry, blackberry and plum. Generous toasty oak and firm tannins balance with avalanche of fruit to give a wine that cannot be ignored.

Merlot, France

Made in 6 weeks
Price: $219.99 in store/$159.99 at home

Alcohol: 13.2%
Body: Medium
Oak: Medium
Sweetness: Dry

Notes: Although Merlot needs little introduction, this a a true French Merlot. Harvested early than New World styles the wine expresses strawberry and raspberry backed by dark fruit. Tannins are velvety and balance the higher acidity of this fresh vibrant wine. Soft oak adds structure without overwhelming the tantalizing notes of vanilla, violets and fresh leaves.

Mobirise

Montepulciano, Italy

Made in 6 weeks
Price: $219.99 in store/$159.99 at home
Alcohol: 13.0%
Body: Full-Medium
Oak: Medium
Sweetness: Dry

Notes: Montepulciano is slightly confusing in that it represents two very distinct wines. There is the Sangiovese-based wine from the Tuscan town of Montepulciano and the widely grown varietal of the same name. Montepulciano is the second most commonly planted grape in Italy after Sangiovese. Like all widely grown grapes it suffers from a bottom end of all quality grapes, but Montepulciano d’Abruzzzo is an excellent wine. There are unique flavours of boysenberry with cherry and plum, and subtle notes of oregano and tar. This is a medium to full bodied wine that expresses oak tannins, and the acidity in equal proportion.

Mobirise

Pinot Noir, Chile

Made in 6 weeks
Price: $219.99 in store/$159.99 at home

Alcohol: 13%
Body: Medium
Oak: Medium
Sweetness: Dry

Notes: Pinot Noir is often blended with Syrah to give color and body, but as a single varietal from cool-climate vineyards Pinot Noir is a truly unique wine. This is perhaps most readily demonstrated by the very high prices achieved for the best Pinot Noir vintages. Fortunately for us Chile offers us something approaching the same quality at a fraction of the price. This one offers favours of red cherry, blackBerry and strawberry, but it is the haunting ethereal and earthy notes but make this wine so special. Often overlooked on the shelves, it deserves your attention.

Mobirise

Shiraz, Australia

Made in 6 weeks
Price: $219.99 in store/$159.99 at home

Alcohol: 13.5%
Body: Medium
Oak: Heavy
Sweetness: Dry

Notes: No lineup would be complete without an Australian Shiraz, and this wine lives up to expectations. There is a perfect nose of jammy black fruits and pepper, the reflects the first taste. Although this is considered a medium bodied red, the jammy fruits, baking spices and lingering pepper give it real depth. Heavy oak, hints of leather and spice, and rich notes of cassis make this such an enjoyable wine. The moderate tannins allow the wine to be drunk from bottling, whilst still giving body and structure.
